Trauma Supply
Expiration Dates

You bought an IFAK. You stored it. You haven't touched it since. Then you wonder: Does this stuff expire? Can I still use it if the date passed? Is my tourniquet still good after 5 years in a hot truck? Here's the truth: Some expiration dates are hard limits. Others are manufacturer CYA dates. Using expired gear can mean life or death.

Definitive guide to trauma supply shelf life. No fluff. Just data.

Not all expiration dates are created equal. Real Expiration: The product chemically degrades past this date. It won't work. CYA Expiration: The product is probably fine, but the manufacturer can't guarantee performance without costly long-term testing. Here's the breakdown.

Hemorrhage Control

🩹
Tourniquets
5-7 yrs stated, 10+ real
🩸
Hemostatic Gauze
3-5 yrs, replace on date
🧻
Pressure Bandages
5 yrs stated, 7-10 real

Tourniquets (CAT, SOF-T, RATS)

Shelf Life: 5-7 years (stated) | 10+ years if stored properly
Safe Past Date? Yes, with inspection
What Degrades: Velcro (loses adhesion), plastic buckle (brittle with UV), strap (dry rot)
Inspection: Pull strap hard (Velcro should hold), flex buckle (should bend smoothly), rotate windlass (should turn freely), check for white powder on strap (replace if present)

Hemostatic Gauze (QuikClot, Celox, ChitoGauze)

Shelf Life: 3-5 years
Safe Past Date? NO. Replace on date.
Why: Kaolin or chitosan coating loses hemostatic properties. Once degraded, it's just regular gauze. You won't know it failed until you need it.
Verdict: CRITICAL REPLACE. Do not use past expiration.

Pressure Bandages (Israeli, OLAES, ETD)

Shelf Life: 5 years (stated) | 7-10 years if stored properly
Safe Past Date? Yes, 2-5 years past with inspection
Inspection: Stretch bandage (should recoil), check pressure bar (no cracks), open package (replace if gauze smells musty)

Airway & Breathing

💨
Chest Seals
3-5 yrs, replace on date
👃
NPA
3-5 yrs stated, 5-7 real
😷
CPR Masks
3-5 yrs stated, 5-10 real

Chest Seals (Hyfin, Halo, NuSeal)

Shelf Life: 3-5 years
Safe Past Date? NO. Replace on date.
Why: Adhesive dries out and loses tackiness. Foil pouch can develop micro-tears. If adhesive fails, air enters chest cavity causing tension pneumothorax. You can't test adhesion without opening.
Verdict: CRITICAL REPLACE. Adhesive failure is silent and fatal.

Nasopharyngeal Airways (NPA)

Shelf Life: 3-5 years (stated) | 5-7 years if stored properly
Safe Past Date? Yes, 2-3 years past with inspection
Inspection: Flex tube (should bend smoothly), check flange (no cracks), feel surface (replace if sticky or gummy)

CPR Masks / Pocket Masks

Shelf Life: 3-5 years (stated) | 5-10 years if stored properly
Safe Past Date? Yes, 5+ years past with inspection
Inspection: Blow through valve (air should only go one direction), squeeze cushion (should rebound), check for cracks

Personal Protection

Nitrile Gloves

Shelf Life: 3-5 years (stated) | 5-7 years if stored properly
Safe Past Date? Yes, 2-3 years past with inspection
Inspection: Pull glove (should stretch, not tear), feel surface (replace if sticky or gummy), check for yellowing discoloration

Latex Gloves

Shelf Life: 3-5 years
Safe Past Date? NO. Replace on date.
Why: Latex degrades faster than nitrile, becomes brittle, loses elasticity, allergen potential increases with age

Tools & Miscellaneous

SAM Splints
Indefinite

Trauma Shears
Indefinite
🌡️
Thermal Blankets
5 yrs stated, 10+ real

SAM Splints

Shelf Life: Indefinite (no official expiration)
Safe Past Date? Yes, indefinitely
What Degrades: Foam padding (can separate from aluminum), adhesive on padding
Verdict: Indefinite shelf life. Replace only if physically damaged.

Trauma Shears

Shelf Life: Indefinite (no official expiration)
Safe Past Date? Yes, indefinitely
Inspection: Cut through denim (should slice cleanly), open/close pivot (should be smooth), check for rust or corrosion
Verdict: Indefinite shelf life. Sharpen blades as needed.

Thermal Blankets (Space Blankets)

Shelf Life: 5 years (stated) | 10+ years if stored properly
Safe Past Date? Yes, 5-10 years past with inspection
Inspection: Unfold blanket (foil should not peel), check for holes or tears, feel material (replace if brittle)

Quick Reference: Replace vs. Inspect

Product Replace on Date? Safe Past Expiration? Notes
Tourniquet No Yes (2-5 years) Inspect Velcro, buckle, strap
Hemostatic Gauze YES NO Chemical degradation is real
Chest Seals YES NO Adhesive failure is silent/fatal
Pressure Bandage No Yes (2-5 years) Check elastic, pressure bar
NPA No Yes (2-3 years) Check for brittleness
CPR Mask No Yes (5+ years) Test one-way valve
Nitrile Gloves No Yes (2-3 years) Replace if sticky/brittle
SAM Splint N/A Indefinite No expiration
Trauma Shears N/A Indefinite Sharpen as needed
Thermal Blanket No Yes (5-10 years) Check foil integrity

The Bottom Line

Some expiration dates are real. Some are conservative. Knowing the difference matters when your life depends on your gear.

Hard Rules: Hemostatic gauze: Replace on date. No exceptions. Chest seals: Replace on date. No exceptions. Everything else: Inspect, test, and use judgment.

Storage Matters: Cool, dry, dark = maximum shelf life. Hot vehicle = reduce shelf life by 30-50%. Moisture exposure = immediate replacement.

Audit your kit quarterly. Replace what's expired. Test what's questionable. And when you need it, you'll know it works.
